Rhino Species >> Javan Rhinoceros

The skin of this rhino is a dusky-grey color, hairless, with a number of loose folds suggests armor plating like their bigger cousin. Mostly a browser, but will graze leaves, young shoots, twigs and fallen fruits. Live in dense lowland tropical rainforest on a peninsula of western Java and in Vietnam. They were thought to be extinct. Only rediscovered in 1988. Though not as large as the closely related Indian Rhinoceros, the adult Javan Rhinoceros will only weight up to between 1,360 and 2,000 kg and its body will reach up to approximately 3.2 m in length.

The female Javan Rhinoceros are slightly bigger than the males. Also like the Indian Rhino, the Javan Rhino has an armor-like appearance given by it's gray skin that folds into the shoulder, back, and rump of the animal. The horn of the Javan Rhino differs between the males and females, with the males horn reaching up to about 26 cm, and the females horn are stubby and knob like, or they have no horn at all.

The males and females of the Javan Rhinoceros species reach sexual maturity at a younger and closer age to each other than that of the closely related Indian Rhino. The males reach sexual maturity at approximately 6 years of age, and the females reach it at approximately 3-4 years of age. The pregnancy in the Javan Rhinoceros lasts for approximately 16 months, and there is usually an interval of about 4-5 years between births.

In the early 1930's, the Javan rhino was hunted to near extinction because it was thought by some cultures that its horn and blood had medical powers. Now, only about 60 of this rhino are found in the world, none of which are in captivity. Even with conservation efforts being made, the chance of survival for this species of rhinoceros seems very grim.

They are solitary animals, with the exception of mothers and calves, and breeding pairs.Their diet includes up to 150 different plant species. They will eat around 50 kg of food each day. Male's home ranges are about 12-20 km. Female's home ranges are about 3-14 km. Excellent sense of smell and hearing and have relatively poor eyesight.
